Herschel W. Barker, 87, of Pikeville, Kentucky, formerly of Hiram, Georgia, returned to his heavenly home on Monday, December 30, 2019, after a long-illness. Herschel was born in Piedmont, Alabama on November 15, 1932 to his parents the late Reubin Phillip Barker and Ruby Brummit Barker. Herschel was a proud veteran who served in both the Army and Air Force branches of the military. Among other professions, he retired as a Field Engineer for MAI Systems Corporation, Atlanta, Georgia. Herschel was a very kind, intelligent and talented man. He enjoyed singing and music of all kinds, always had a corny joke to tell and built and flew his own Ultra Lite plane. Herschel was a very devoted Christian and was a member of the Coal Run Church of Christ.
Herschel was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Hazel Barker, one brother, Alvin Barker and two sisters, Ruth Jones and Alice Love.
He is survived by his wife and longtime caregiver, Barbara “Ford” Barker; three daughters: Susan Schultz (Larry) of Cassatt, SC, Lori Blackmon (Johnny) of Dallas, Ga., Lynette Barker of Rockmart, Ga.; one son: Steve Barker (Karen) of Ball Ground, Ga.; two step-daughters: Sherri Robinson of Lexington, Ky. and Angie Clevinger (Greg) of Pikeville, Ky.; six grandchildren: Laura Hoelscher (Blake) of Kennesaw, Ga., Melissa Blackmon of Murray, Ut., Adam Barker of Dallas, Ga., Mitchell Barker of Ball Ground, Ga., Jessica Day (Mike) of Temple, Ga., and Ryan Prewitt (Samantha) of Rockmart, Ga.; seven step-grandchildren: Patton Thompson (Laura Marie) of Lexington, Ky., Garrett Clevinger, Austin Clevinger (Dakota), Westin Clevinger, Mason Clevinger, Blair Altman (Ryan), Jasmine Robinson and Scot Robinson (Kelli), all of Pikeville, Ky.; twelve great-grandchildren and a host of loving family and friends.
A special celebration of life will be held at a later date for family.

Worked with Herschel in Atlanta in the 1970s. Herschel was proud of the longevity of his Subaru long before others would even consider buying a foreign made car. RIP Herschel. We had some good times.
